Box Office Hits of the 70’s

February 6, 2008

The seventies was the decade of big hair and big attitude. It was also the decade that introduced us to big box office hits. When Universal released Steven Spielberg’s Jaws in the summer of 1975, it was the first movie in US history to gross over $100 m at the domestic box office and ushered in the era of the blockbuster.

Strawberry Point from the Air

February 2, 2008

This photo was uncovered in the school library and unfortunately didn’t have any documentation attached to it. It could be from the 50’s, 60’s, or even 70’s from the styling of the cars. Check out the parking lot and absence of the play structure and additional buildings that currently house the library and EDS.

Graduating Class of 1970

February 1, 2008

Thanks to alumnus Jill Templeton (top row, 3rd from left), we were able to track down this photo of the class of 1969-70. More importantly I was able to get some insight to the origins of the “class name” given to Mr’s Kline’s class.

The books on this list all held the #1 position for fiction on the New York Time Besteller List during the 70’s. Although The Godfather, by Mario Puzo, gave up it’s position at #1 on February 8, 1970, it continued to stay on the charts and remained influential throughout the 70’s and beyond.

      Super Strawberries

      January 27, 2008

Who are the mysterious students in this photo? Originally called the Wild Strawberries they are subsequently renamed Mr. Kline’s Super Strawberries. Were they wild or super? More importantly, who was Mr. Kline? Will an informed alumnus or faculty member please step forward and explain who these people were and why they had their own group photo? Inquiring minds want to know.

Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year”

      January 24, 2008

Time’s Person of the Year is bestowed by the editors of Time Magazine on the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year. Time officially changed the title from Man of the Year to Person of the Year in 1999. Up to that point, the only women to win that recognition were: Wallis Simpson in 1936, Soong Mei-ling (Madame Chiang Kai-Shek) in 1937, Queen Elizabeth II in 1952, and Corazon Aquino in 1986. Women had also been included in several groups, namely Hungarian Freedom Fighter in 1956, U.S. scientists in 1960, Twenty-Five and Under in 1966, The Middle Americans in 1969, and American Women in 1974. Continue and read on about the “Men of the Year” from the 70’s.
