Box Office Hits of the 70’s

By Michael

The seventies was the decade of big hair and big attitude. It was also the decade that introduced us to big box office hits. When Universal released Steven Spielberg’s Jaws in the summer of 1975, it was the first movie in US history to gross over $100 m at the domestic box office and ushered in the era of the blockbuster.

The 70’s started the trend for big summer movies and also gave rise to some of biggest directors that dominate cinema today, including Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather 1972, The Godfather Part 2 1974, Apocalypse Now 1979), George Lucas (American Graffiti 1973, Star Wars 1977), Steven Spielberg (Jaws 1975, Close Encounters of the Third Kind 1977), and Martin Scorsese (Mean Streets 1973, Taxi Driver 1976). Although all of these directors had careers that started before the 70’s, it was in this decade that they came to prominence among American moviegoers.
